My Car May Be a Total Loss???

So the estimator came to my house last night and said that he agreed with the repairs that the body shop said need to be done. However, he also said considering my car's age (8 years) and total mileage (~55,000), the insurance company may consider the car a total loss! The total estimated cost of the repairs was only $1,800. When I went onto Kelley Blue Book today, the value of my car is at least $5,600 for a private party sale. I am not sure how this would qualify as a total loss, but I am awaiting to hear back from the insurance company.
